Latest version.
  • (A) Policy statement

This policy provides information related to the four -year curriculum of the "COM" (college of medicine). Students successfully completing this program will be granted a "M.D." degree.

    (B) Purpose of policy

This policy provides a framework for medical education in the four year curriculum.

    (C) Scope

This policy applies to medical students in the M.D. program in the college of medicine and life sciences.

    (D) Procedure

The "UTCOM" (university of Toledo college of medicine) curriculum is under continuous evaluation and review and is therefore subject to revision at any time. Revisions in the curriculum apply to all currently enrolled students, unless stated otherwise.

    (E) Four-year curricular organization/plan

The foundational science curriculum ("M1-M2" academic years) spans the first eighteen months. The M1-M2 academic years consists of five integrated threads/courses that include cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, anatomy, embryology, histology behavioral sciences, systems pathology, systems physiology, neuroscience, immunity, infectious disease and pharmacology.

The principles of clinical medicine curriculum are an integrated course that is longitudinal across the foundational science curriculum. The curriculum encompasses medical ethics, clinical decision making, clinical reasoning, communications and interprofessional education, population health, patient safety and business of medicine. This curricular component also oversees and organizes the integrated clinical experience across the foundational science curriculum.

Concurrent with the integrated foundational science curriculum, students are encouraged to be active participants in a diverse number of electives.

The third academic year (M3) contains the majority of the required clinical clerkships. Preceding the start of the required clerkships, all students are required to participate in a one week bridge to clerkship course. The required clerkships consist of internal medicine, ten weeks; surgery, ten weeks; pediatrics, five weeks; obstetrics/gynecology, five weeks; family medicine, five weeks, neurology, five weeks; psychiatry, five weeks and a required four-week elective rotation that has to be completed within the UTCOM and its affiliated health systems.

The fourth academic year (M4) consists predominantly of elective clerkship experiences. Elective credit totaling thirty-two weeks is required during the fourth year; twenty-four weeks of those thirty-two must be in clinical electives. A four week acting internship is required for graduation within the UTCOM and its affiliated system in a discipline of student's choice. A minimum of twelve weeks of clinical elective clerkships must be taken at UTCOM or our affiliated locations. Please note, independent study electives cannot be used to satisfy this requirement.

All students are required to complete a minimum of eight weeks of clerkships in an "AHEC" (area health education center). AHEC sites are located in nineteen counties of northwest Ohio, and organized through AHEC centers in Sandusky, Lima, and Bryan, Ohio. These may constitute part of a required or an elective clerkship. An AHEC rotation taken as part of a required clerkship satisfies the time requirements of both the AHEC and the required clerkship. Most of the AHEC sites are not within commuting distance of Toledo. Therefore, students should expect to plan accordingly for living at the AHEC sites.

Some elective clerkships may be performed away from UTCOM. To do an away clerkship, students must be registered and in good academic standing. Any student with outstanding grades of incomplete, fail or defer cannot participate in away clerkships. Students with a grade of incomplete, fail or defer maybe permitted to apply for an away clerkship, with the understanding that they can't enroll in the clerkship until they have resumed their good academic standing.
