4765-8-06. EMS certificate to practice and EMS certificate to teach cycles and continuing education requirements

  • (A) This rule shall refer to individuals applying for initial certification, reciprocity, or reinstatement of an EMS certificate to practice or EMS certificate to teach.

    (B) An EMS provider certificate to practice shall expire on the individual's birthday in the third year, except as provided in paragraph (C) of this rule. In order to be eligible to renew the certificate to practice, the individual shall complete the following percentage of required continuing education hours, the total of which are set forth in Chapters 4765-12, 4765-15, 4765-16, and 4765-17 of the Administrative Code, for the following merged certification cycle:

    (1) Twelve months or less, no continuing education hours are required;

    (2) More than twelve months but less than twenty-four months, thirty per cent of the hours of continuing education for each respective level of certification, as set forth in the appendix to this rule;

    (3) Twenty-four months but less thirty-six months, sixty per cent of the hours of continuing education for each respective level of certification, as set forth in the appendix attached to this rule;

    (4) Thirty-six months or more, one hundred per cent of the hours of continuing education for each respective level of certification, as set forth in the appendix to this rule.

    (C) A holder of a certificate to practice as an EMS provider, issued to an individual who also holds a current firefighter and/or fire safety inspector certificate, shall expire on the same date as the individual's firefighter certificate or fire safety inspector certificate, if the individual does not possess a current firefighter certificate. In order to be eligible to renew the certificate to practice, the individual shall complete the following percentage of required continuing education hours, the total of which are set forth in Chapters 4765-12, 4765-15, 4765-16 and 4765-17 of the Administrative Code, for the following merged certification cycle:

    (1) Twelve months or less, no continuing education hours are required;

    (2) More than twelve months but less than twenty-four months, thirty per cent of the hours of continuing education for each respective level of certification, as set forth in the appendix to this rule;

    (3) Twenty-four months but less than thirty-six months, sixty per cent of the hours of continuing education for each respective level of certification, as set forth in the appendix to this rule;

    (4) Thirty-six months or more, one hundred per cent of the hours of continuing education for each respective level of certification, as set forth in the appendix to this rule.

    (D) An EMS certificate to teach shall expire on the individual's birthday in the third year except as provided in paragraphs (E) and (F) of this rule. In order to be eligible to renew the certificate to teach, the individual shall complete the following percentage of required continuing education and instruction hours, the total of which are set forth in Chapter 4765-18 of the Administrative Code, for the following merged certification cycle:

    (1) Twelve months or less, no continuing education or instruction hours are required;

    (2) More than twelve months but less than twenty-four months, thirty per cent of the hours of continuing education and instruction for each respective level of the certificate to teach, as set forth in the appendix to this rule;

    (3) Twenty-four months but less than thirty-six months, sixty per cent of the hours of continuing education and instruction for each respective level of the certificate to teach, as set forth in the appendix to this rule;

    (4) Thirty-six months or more, one hundred per cent of the hours of continuing education and instruction for each respective level of certificate to teach, as set forth in the appendix to this rule.

    (E) An EMS certificate to teach, issued to an individual who also holds a current certificate to practice as an EMS provider, shall expire on the same date as the individual's certificate to practice. In order to be eligible to renew the certificate to teach, the individual shall complete the following percentage of required continuing education and instruction hours, the total of which are set forth in Chapter 4765-18 of the Administrative Code, for the following merged certification cycle:

    (1) Twelve months or less, no continuing education or instruction hours are required;

    (2) More than twelve months but less than twenty-four months, thirty per cent of the hours of continuing education and instruction for each respective level of the certificate to teach, as set forth in the appendix to this rule;

    (3) Twenty-four months but less than thirty-six months, sixty per cent of the hours of continuing education and instruction for each respective level of the certificate to teach, as set forth in the appendix to this rule;

    (4) Thirty-six months or more, one hundred per cent of the hours of continuing education and instruction for each respective level of certificate to teach, as set forth in the appendix to this rule.

    (F) An EMS certificate to teach, issued to an individual who also holds a current firefighter and/or fire safety inspector certificate, shall expire on the same date as the individual's firefighter certificate or fire safety inspector certificate, if the individual does not possess a current firefighter certificate. In order to be eligible to renew the certificate to teach, the individual shall complete the following percentage of required continuing education and instruction hours, the total of which are set forth in Chapter 4765-18 of the Administrative Code, for the following merged certification cycle:

    (1) Twelve months or less, no continuing education or instruction hours are required;

    (2) More than twelve months but less than twenty-four months, thirty per cent of the hours of continuing education and instruction for each respective level of the certificate to teach, as set forth in the appendix to this rule;

    (3) Twenty-four months but less than thirty-six months, sixty per cent of the hours of continuing education and instruction for each respective level of the certificate to teach, as set forth in the appendix to this rule;

    (4) Thirty-six months or more, one hundred per cent of the hours of continuing education and instruction for each respective level of certificate to teach, as set forth in the appendix to this rule.

    (G) Once a mutual expiration date is established for all EMS and fire certificates, all certificates will expire on the individual's birthday in the third year.
